Do multiplication and division left to right.

Then addition and subtraction left to right.

Combining Two Number Sentences

Replace the first result with the first calculation in parentheses:

$$2 \times 4 = 8,\quad 8 \times 3 = 24 \quad\Rightarrow\quad (2 \times 4) \times 3 = 24$$
$$63 \div 7 = 9,\quad 9 \div 3 = 3 \quad\Rightarrow\quad (63 \div 7) \div 3 = 3$$

Associative Property of Multiplication

$$(a \times b) \times c = a \times (b \times c)$$

Grouping can change; the product stays the same. Useful for “pack boxes into bigger boxes” problems.

Cube / Array Models

The same block of $30$ unit cubes can be seen as different groupings:

  • $3$ groups of $2 \times 5$: $(2 \times 5) \times 3 = 30$
  • $2$ groups of $3 \times 5$: $2 \times (3 \times 5) = 30$
Three separate 2 by 5 cube blocks and two separate 3 by 5 cube blocks
Ask: “What stays the same? What changes — the grouping or the total?”
