Parts of addition / subtraction

Addition

$$\text{Addend} + \text{Addend} = \text{Sum}$$

Subtraction

$$\text{Minuend} - \text{Subtrahend} = \text{Difference}$$

Unit language before calculating

$$\text{8 thousands} + \text{41 tens} = 8000 + 410 = 8410$$
$$\text{11 hundreds} - \text{42 tens} = 1100 - 420 = 680$$
Strategy: Estimate first, then column check. For “difference between greatest and smallest,” identify extremes, then subtract once.
